Particularly animated Intersaison. Tested by the departure with the retirement of Stewart and the death of Cevert, the Tyrrell stable has completely to reconstitute its duet of pilots. Ken Tyrrell makes confidence in impetuous Jody Scheckter (which was often highlighted in 1973, but not always of best in the ways…) like in Patrick Stripping of straw, more or less imposed by Elf, the silent partner titrates stable, and already seen in this team as a third pilot. The transfer of the year relates to Emerson Fittipaldi, which left Lotus to join McLaren (which lost Scheckter and especially Peter Revson, party to join the American stable Shadow). Just like the previous year, the regional one of the stage Carlos Reutemann is affirmed like the strong man of the GP of Argentina. Dominator, it must however yield the victory for the arrival to the veteran Denny Hulme. Supplementing the podium, Lauda and Regazzoni post the return in form of Scuderia Ferrari after one long period of thin cows.
In Brazil, under the rain, after a new last-ditch struggle of Reutemann, it is Emerson Fittipaldi which is essential for the greatest joy of its supporters. Solid second, Clay Regazzoni takes the head of the championship.
Dominator but unlucky person since the beginning of the season, Carlos Reutemann takes down finally his first victory in South Africa. The displacement of the caravan of F1 in Africa is unfortunately marked by the death of the American pilot Peter Revson, victim of an accident during private tests the week preceding the race.
He also with its advantage since the beginning of year, Niki Lauda gains its first victory in Spain, in front of Regazzoni and Fittipaldi. The brawl between Fittipaldi and the Ferrari pilots continue in Belgium, with a victory of the Brazilian pilot, which takes again the orders of the championship and precedes from now on Lauda for a small point, and Regazzoni three lengths.
Presented at the beginning of season like one of the big favorites of the championship, but handicapped by its new Lotus 76 which does not prove as powerful as not discounted, Peterson remembers to the good memory of all while being essential on Monaco on the wheel of old Lotus 72 (whose design goes back to the season 1970).
After Reutemann and Lauda, it is with the turn of Jody Scheckter to gain its first success at the time of the GP of Sweden. According to an ascending trajectory since several races, the Tyrrell pilot carries out at the same time spectacular brought closer with the championship.
Marking time since two races because of the unreliability of its car, Lauda joins again with the victory with Zandvoort and is replaced again in the wake of Fittipaldi to the championship, before taking the first place with the general following his podium of Dijon. It will however be the beginning of black long series for the Austrian pilot, who seems well left to fly away with the championship with Brands Hatch before being victim of a puncture for the arrival which costs him the victory (with the profit of Scheckter). Then, victim of its ardor, Lauda is left upon the departure of the GP of Germany. The victory returns this day there in Clay Regazzoni, always very regular since the beginning of the season failing to post the same potential as its Austrian team-member. Regazzoni takes the orders of the championship thus. With 44 points, it precedes Scheckter (41 points), Lauda (38 points) and Fittipaldi (37 points).
In Austria, only arrived fifth but only survivor of the four protagonists of the championship, Regazzoni consolidates still a little its advance with the general, with three handles of the outcome. But all is called into question to Monza, test gained by Peterson but especially marked by the rout of Ferrari. Fittipaldi and Scheckter benefit from it to fill part of their delay on the Swiss pilot. Regazzoni, with 46 points, counts nothing any more but 1 point in advance on Scheckter (45) and 3 on Fittipaldi (43).
Making balance since several races, Lauda misses an ultimate occasion to be started again in the race with the title while leaving to the fault in the last turns by the GP Canada. It thus offers the victory to Fittipaldi, which with 52 points, finds the head of the championship with equality with Regazzoni the day before the ultimate handle of the championship. Blocked at 45 points after its abandonment in Canada, Scheckter preserves a mathematical chance to be titrated.
In Watkins Glen, author of a good departure, Regazzoni sinks quickly in the depths of the classification. Fourth, Fittipaldi thus takes down its second world title of the pilots.
