Championship of the world junior of male basketball
The championship of the world junior of male basketball (in English FIBA U19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ) was created by FIBA in 1979.
This competition gathers the best teams of Basket-ball of each continent whose players are old of less than 19 years.
Until 2007, the championship took place every 4 years. It from now on is organized every 2 years.
History
After having comprised 12 teams (in 1979 and 1987) and 14 teams (in 1983), the FIBA widened the number of participants in 16 teams since 1991.The eighth edition of the championships of the world junior of male basketball, which proceeded from July 12th to 22nd 2007 with Novi Sad, crowned the organizing country, the Serbia.
The next edition will take place in 2009. The FIBA did not announce the country host yet.
Qualifications
The 16 teams are selected according to their classification at the time of the championships continental juniors (18 years and less).These championships are organized by the FIBA on each continent the year preceding the championship by the world. The distribution of the qualificative places is the following one:
- 5 places for the teams of the zone FIBA Europe
- 5 places for the teams of the zone FIBA Americas
- 3 places for the teams of the zone FIBA Asia
- 2 places for the teams of the zone FIBA Africa
- 1 place for the teams of the zone FIBA Oceania
