Championship of the Netherlands of football

The Championnat of the Netherlands of football ( Eredivisie in Dutch) is an annual competition implying in 2007 - 2008 the 18 best clubs of the country.

Presentation

The regional competitions exist with the Netherlands since the end of the Années 1880, but it is necessary to await 1897 - 98 to see setting up a phase of national championship implying best the formations of each area. The championship knows a major change in 1954 with the very progressive introduction of professionalism. In 1956 one gives up the regional structure of the championship; it is the installation of a single division of 18 clubs.

The Football Dutch has been dominated for already seven decades by three large clubs: Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord Rotterdam. This trio let escape one title over the 40 last years (victory of AZ Alkmaar at the conclusion of the season 1980 - 1981).

The last of the classification is relegated at the end of the season on the lower floor (Eerste divisy), while stoppings of relegation imply the two formations classified 16th and 17th with 6 clubs resulting from D2.
