The Championship of Rio of football , called in Brazil Campeonato Carioca , is the championship of football of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The first season was disputed in 1906, it is the second championship by order of seniority in Brazil after the Championnat of São Paulo.
A campaign was then carried out to organize a football league joining together of the clubs like Rio Cricket and Athletic Association, Fluminense FC, Football and Athletic Club, América FC, Bangu Atlético Club, Sport Club Petrópolis and Paysandu Cricket Club.
“Liga Metropolitana de Football” (LMF) was created in 1905, chaired first of all by the President of the club of Bangu, Jose Villas Boas, this last being replaced quickly by Francis Walter.
The first edition of the Carioca championship took place in 1906 with the participation of six teams: Fluminense, Botafogo, Bangu, Football and Athletic, Payssandu and Rio Cricket. América did not dispute this first season, although belonging to the founding members. Fluminense was the first club champion of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
Fluminense, Botafogo, América, Paysandu, Rio Cricket, and Riachuelo founded, in February 1908, the Liga Metropolitana de Sports Athleticos (or LMSA) which organized the Carioca championship of this year (gained by Fluminense FC).
In 1911, Botafogo gave up the LMSA and founded Associação de Football C Rio de Janeiro (or AFRJ), but this league was turned in derision because Botafogo was the only club of reputation. AFRJ was incorporated in the LMSA in 1913.
In 1917, after having known several corruption affairs, the LMSA was replaced by the Liga Metropolitana de Desportos Terrestres (or LMDT). Once more, Fluminense FC gained this competition.
A scission took place on March 1st, 1924, with the creation of the Associação Metropolitana de Esportes Athleticos (AMEA). AMEA introduced discriminatory rules against the black players or to modest class. Competition AMEA was gained by Fluminense and LMDT by CR Vasco de Gama.
The Liga Carioca de Futebol (or LCF) was founded the January 23rd 1933.
The December 11th, 1934, Botafogo, Vasco, Bangu, São Cristóvão, Andaraí, Olaria, Carioca and Madureira founded the Federação Metropolitana de Desportos (or FMD). This federation incorporated the AMEA.
The Brazilian clubs adopted the professional statute in 1937.
The July 29th 1937, FMD and LCF amalgamated, giving rise to the Liga de Football C Rio de Janeiro (or LFRJ). Into 1941, LFRJ changed name into becoming Federação Metropolitana de Futebol (or FMF). A match between CR Vasco de Gama and América FC was organized to celebrate this event; thereafter the meetings between these two clubs were called Clássico da Paz , which means “the derby of Peace”.
The capital of Brazil was transferred to Brasilia the April 21st 1960, consequently the Federação Metropolitana de Futebol was famous Federação Carioca de Futebol (or FCF). América FC gained the championship this year there.
The States of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara amalgamated.
The September 29th 1978, the Federação de Futebol C Estado C Rio de Janeiro (or FERJ) was created by amalgamating the FCF of the State de Guanabara and the Federação Fluminense de Desportos (or FFD) of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1979 there was an additional edition of the Carioca championship, including other teams which disputed before the Campeonato Fluminense. This competition was called Primeiro Campeonato Estadual de Profissionais and was gained by Fluminense. The normal competition was gained by Flamengo.
In 1996 disputed the Taça Cidade Maravilhosa between eight teams of Rio ((América, Bangu, Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, Madureira, Olaria and Vasco da Gama) which met all only once. Botafogo was champion and Fluminense second. The championship of this year there was gained by Flamengo.
