Championship of France of football of league 2
The Championnat of France of football of League 2 , usually called Ligue 2 (or L2 ) is the second division of professional Football in France. This championship constitutes the anteroom of the Ligue 1.
Organization, operation
The organization and the management of the Championship of France of League 2 are entrusted to the Professional football league, which decrees the championship of France of League 2 with the club whose team at the head finishes classification at the conclusion of the last day of the competition.
The three first of the classification of League 2 join the following season the teams of the Ligue 1. They thus replace the last three of League 1, which go down in League 2. Contrary, the last three of the classification are relegated in National of which the three first are promoted in L2.
It is the Commission of Organization of the Competitions (which also organizes the matches of League 1) which ensures the organization and the homologation of the matches.
The clubs of League 2 take part in the Coupe of the League, with the clubs of League 1 and the clubs of National Championship under professional statute.
History
Animated beginnings (1933-1939)
Division 2 is created in 1934, one year after Division 1. 23 clubs divided into two groups (14 in North and 9 in the South) take part in this first edition. Among these clubs, six are relegated of D1 1932-32 which passes from 20 to 14 clubs while the others are clubs néo-pros. One will earlier note the presence of certain hostile clubs to the professional statute one year such RC Strasbourg, the Amiens AC, Le Havre AC and RC Roubaix in particular. This first edition is also marked by the first abandonment. FCA Nice declares fixed price general in the course of championship. Paradoxically, the record of multitude in championship of France (confused D1 and D2) is established the November 11th 1933 for a meeting of D2 between FC Rouen and Le Havre AC: 16.040 paying spectators. And even the record of receipts on a match belongs to D2 with 114.000 francs left to the counters of the match Red Star - FC Rouen the April 2nd 1934. This season 1933-34 is besides that of all the records for D2 with the 54 goals registered by Jean Nicolas (FC Rouen) in only 24 matches. At the conclusion of the championship in two groups, final stages are held to designate a single champion and for promotion in Division 1. The May 20th 1934, Red Star accommodates Alès and is essential 3 to 2 in this final for the first title of D2. These two clubs are directly promoted in D1, but two other clubs also are concerned with promotion this season because of the passage from 14 to 16 clubs in D1. Four clubs (second and third of each group) are invited to dispute these stoppings. The FC Rouen which militated for a direct promotion of the second of each group (the FCR had finished second of the Northern group) decides Na not to take part in these stoppings. The three clubs remaining in string (RC Strasbourg, FC Mulhouse and ACE Saint-Etienne) clash between the May 13rd and the June 10th out of hen of championship return ticket and Strasbourg and Mulhouse empochent their ticket for the elite. In order to avoid the abandonments in the course of season, the too overdrawn clubs at the conclusion of season 1933-34 are excluded from the professional competitions: Hyères FC, ACE Monaco, Deportivo Bordeaux and ACE Béziers leave thus the bosom pro and D2 is found with 16 clubs, like D1. In spite of these precautions, the season 1934-35 is marked by the abandonment in the course of season of the Paris iens of the French Club (December 2nd) and of the Malouins of the US Saint-Servan (February 3rd) while SC Nimes gives up its statute pro at the end of the season. The situation is stabilized the following season with the creation of D3 centered mainly on the Picardy but becomes complicated following the stop of this new competition in spring 1937. 31 clubs are then found in situation to develop in D2 but the abandonments of five of them limits finally this number to 26. Instead of setting up two groups, the commission of the competitions of the FF sets up a test in two phases. The first phase gathers the 26 clubs in string in four groups. The four first of each group are then qualified to dispute a new championship with sixteen clubs in match return ticket which began at the end of November. The clubs not qualified for this phase dispute a tournament of consolation which one can compare to D3. A cascade of abandonments is recorded at the end of this season 1937-38 making it possible the FF to position back a championship to single hen with 22 clubs all the same. The Second world war puts a term at these competitions between 1939 and 1945.
The closed championship (1945-1970)
August 1st Since the creation of professionalism in France and until 1970, the last clubs classified in D2 are not relegated to the lower level. Professionals and amateurs evolve/move in two separate worlds. On the other hand, to compensate for the abandonments which multiply in the Années 1960, the League equips with the professional statute some clubs resulting from the world amateur. Some clubs refuse however to cross this course, Dijon in the highest degree.
The championship " open" (1970-1993)
August 1st Separation between amateurs and professionals disappears in 1970 following the reform from the competitions operated by the FF and the League. D2 becomes thus " open" , i.e. accessible to the professional clubs, semi-professionals or amateurs. The three first of each group of CFA are thus promoted in D2 at the conclusion of the season 1969 -70 like 19 other clubs selected on file by the FF and the League. Three groups of sixteen clubs are thus set up for the season 1970 - 71. One preserves three groups during two seasons, then one reduces to two groups of 18 clubs in 1973.
Obligatory professional statute (since 1993)
August 1st A new reform of the competitions modifies gives it in D2 starting from 1993. The single group and the professional statute are restored. However, the last at the conclusion of each season will be relegated on the lower floor while the promoted resulting ones from the National will be equipped automatically, after passage in front of DNCG, of the professional statute.
