Championship of France of Rugby Signal 16 in 2002-03

The Championship of France of Rugby to XV of the first division in 2002 - 2003 bears the name of Top 16 , as its name indicates it sixteen clubs dispute this competition.

After the regular phase disputed by matches outward journey and return, putting at the catches all the divided teams in two hens, the first four teams of each hen dispute the phase of qualification to the semi-finals. For this phase of qualification (or Play-offs ) the eight qualified teams are divided into two hens and dispute matches outward journey and return. The matches disputed during the regular phase also count for the phase of qualification. The two first of each hen are qualified for the semi-finals.

In parallel a phase of maintenance (or Play down disputes) between the teams classified 5th with 8th in the regular phase. The two last are retrogressed in Pro D2. The matches disputed during the regular phase also count for the phase of maintenance.

The French Stade finally gains the championship of Top16 Rugby after having beaten the Stade Toulousain. It gains one 3rd title in six years.

The CA Brive and Montpellier RC are promoted in Signal 16 in 2003-04. They will replace of the Mons Stade and Bègles-Bordeaux which is relegated in Pro D2.

The DNACG (National management of assistance and control of management), control committee of management of the clubs of the National league of Rugby, pronounces the retrogradation of Bègles-Bordeaux as a Pro D2, whereas the CABBG was the only team never not to have left the elite since the end of the First World War with the Stade Toulousain.
