Championship of Finland of hockey
The championship of Finland Élite of Hockey bears the name of fi Suomenmestaruus-liiga shortened in Sm-liiga ( Suomenmestaruus meaning Finnish championship). It was founded in 1975 to replace the Sm-Sarja, which was basically a league amateur and obtained an agreement with the Finnish Association of hockey, the Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto .
Organization
The league counts fourteen teams and was closed in 2000 in order to prevent that clubs there are promoted or relegated without the change not being approved by the leaders of Sm-liiga, this with the aim of guarantee a high level hockey in this league elite.However, the police chiefs committed themselves accepting the promotion of the gaining first of the Mestis , the higher second leagues in Finland, which will meet certain standards of quality.
