Championship of Europe of football 1976

It is about the 5th edition of the Championnat of Europe of football which is held every four years and is organized by UEFA (association gathering the national federations of Football of Europe).

This edition whose final tournament is organized in Yugoslavia between the 16 and the June 20th 1976 was disputed four teams, each one being qualified via the eliminating heats.

The team of Czechoslovakia gained it at the expense of the team of West Germany in a final where the strong image was the penalty drawn by Antonin Panenka which made the round the world tour.

Only four teams were qualified for the final stage, it is the last time that the tournament proceeded in this manner.

Turn of qualification

The turn of qualification was held in 1974 and 1975 concerning the tests by groups, then in 1976 for the quarterfinals. There were eight groups of qualification, made up each of four teams. The meetings were played by matches outward journey and return. The victories brought back 2 points, a tie 1 point and a defeat 0 points. Only the winners of groups were qualified for the quarterfinals.
