Championship of Australia of football
The championship of Australia of Football was created in 1977 under the name of National Soccer League . It stopped in its old form in 2004 to leave the place since 2005 with a new closed championship (A-League), based on a system of professional franknesses without rises nor descents.
The “A-League” is the national championship of Australia of football. The kickoff of the first season (2005/06) took place on August 26th, 2005. Football had a history rather disturbed in Australia, and is not traditionally a major sport in the country. After the last season of the National Soccer League, the old competition, the federation of Australia of football decided to create a new competition with eight clubs, in order to give again colors with football in the country. Eight cities are transfered to grant a professional frankness: seven in Australia, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle and Gosford, and one in New Zealand, Auckland. The average number of spectators in the Australian stages for the first season of the “A-League” was of 10,861.
The league attracted the support of several large companies, of which Hyundai (principal sponsor), and it is diffused on television on the chain Fox Sports. Reebok provided all the equipment for each team. An advertizing campaign was also launched at the beginning of the first season of the “A-League”, including/understanding a television commercial directed towards the young people, with the currency “Football, goal not ace you know it” (the foot, as you never saw it).
The first two winners were Sydney FC (2005-06) and Melbourne Victory (2006-07). At the conclusion of the second season, the New Zealand Knights were seen withdrawing their license by the league. Because of weak scores (twice last) and of a public very few, they were dissolved and will be replaced by a new New Zealand frankness, the Wellington Phoenix for the season 2007-08.
