The champion is the representative of a camp , which will be opposed to the opposing side in a singular combat which will decide exit of a combat.
Origin
Historically the champion can represent:- a person, in the incapacity to fight itself (woman, child, old man, or, for other reason, a character that its majesty prevents from fighting -- a king for example, even a monk). When the person to be defended does not have a champion natural (a son, a husband) or prédésigné, a white knight (i.e., in Héraldique, deprived of its own marks, therefore not acting for its own account) can be presented to become about it the champion within the framework of a Ordalie or a tournament.
- a whole army, in order to decide exit of a battle by limiting the victims. There exists many example of this practice, of religious origin, for example the challenge of Goliath raised by David, the singular combat between Pâris and Ménélas in the Iliade, or fights it Horaces and Curiaces. There remains frequent that this supposed combat to slice the battle transfers with the simple preliminary confrontation, as that appears in the example of the Illiade . To the paddle of modern times (cf interpellation with the battle of Fontenoy), an arranged battle was very often preceded by a phase of insults and provocations (in general reduced with the simple national anthem or the demonstrations of Pom-pom girl S, it appears still explicitly in the Rugby of today), with a singular combat between two champions.
Nowadays
- the selected champion is obviously most skilful with the combat, which implies a mode of nomination compatible with this objective. The installation of Tournoi S was (and remains, in the sporting world) a practical technique of nomination champion.
By extension
- the modern direction retains especially the performances higher than the others, within the framework of a competition of any nature (for example the economic Concurrence)
