History

The history of Champigny-lès-Langres goes up at the time Roman. At that time the Roman way of Lugdunum (Lyon) with Treverorum (Trier) by Andematunum (Langres), junction of the Via Clutched, crossed the Roman way of Langres in Nasium (Naix, department of the Meuse) in the south of the current village. Important warehouses were installed in the north of this crossroads and the current village. Excavations made it possible to discover the vestiges with the place of them known as " Granges" as well as a great quantity of currencies. In the region, the dating of the majority of the discovered currencies, spreads out 1st at 4th century a. J.C. Another important vestige of the time is the " Victoire" , a headless monumental statue (without head) dated from IIe century, which was discovered into 1961 with the accesses of the Romaine way leading to Trève, near the current water tower. Another statue of approximately 70 cm, always of this time and which according to Alain Catherinet is a Minerve having embanked the Gorgone, was deposited with the town hall at the end of the Nineties.

After this prosperous period arrives the turbid period of the invasions at low Moyen-âge of which there does not remain any trace if it is not the name of Champigny. It would come, according to Vignier (XVIe century) of the battle of Peigney in 301 between the Alamans and the troops of Vandals of Constance Chlorinates of which one of the battle fields, " campus pugnae" , would have become Champigny. But this most probably concerns the Légende. It is allowed today an origin of the name of Champigny by the derivative Campaniacum of Latin CAMPANIA, the Champagne (plain discovered). As for " the " , it means " close de". It should be noted that this Champagne name is also found for localities of the type plain (open field) of many villages. This etymological evolution seems more probable of that of E. Negro presented in the bond of Campaniacum

At the end of the first millenium, the zone of settlement shifted towards the western south of a few kilometers, with the variation of the Roman way, to settle with the site of the current village. The chorus of the church, the bell-tower and undoubtedly part of the Nave, remade since, date from XIIIe century, time of strong demographic expansion. But in the middle of XVe century, Champigny, ruined by the War One hundred Year old, is completely abandoned (1439). The village will be repopulated little by little. The nave of the church is rebuilt in XVe - XVIe century, little before the disorders of the Guerre Thirty Year old which will still see the fire of part of the village by the Croatian in 1642 (Clement Macheret). It is at that time that the bell-tower was strengthened to make it possible to the inhabitants to take refuge there at the time of the passages of hordes of brigands or invasions. The cross of the new cemetery date completion of the XVIIe century. It was brought back old southern entry of the village, located along the Roman way Agrippa. The oldest martyrdom located at the accesses of the school, would date from the XV E century. In the beginning, it would have been installed Champeau place, with the cemetery of the Departeds, to see in the Cloître of the cathedral of Langres before being installed in this place on September 14th, 1749. The characteristic of this martyrdom is that the column unit plus cross is posed on a Gallo-Roman Chapiteau, of Corinthian Ordre, turned over.

Old the Cure, which was also called the strong house because it had means of defense, was also built to the XVII E century.

Same time, dates the house from the Dîme which is at the western entry of the cemetery. It is in this house that the inhabitants came to pay the tax of the dîme to the Chanoines of Langres. At that time, the Seignerie of Champigny depended for half of the Évêque of Langres and for the other of the chapter of the cathedral to which was due Dîme.

The XVIII E century saw the installation of the Master furnace bridge. The first realization goes back to 1763. It probably related to the Ange Gabriel and the Virgin Mary located above the Master furnace bridge. In 1774 of the invoices of Mr. Jayet, sculptor langrois, reveal modifications which gave to the Master furnace bridge his current aspect. The stone table of the former Master furnace bridge as for it, acted as hood for the entry external of the cellar of the cure. The XIX E century, time of great prosperity, made it possible the village to be equipped in fountains. It is into 1831 that was built the monumental fountain located place of the Fountain. It was the head of a unit which was used of Abreuvoir for the animals and as Lavoir for the women of the village.

On this place was also a not very major water level, called " Gué". It was used to bathe the horses and also reserve of fire. Of this unit, only the fountain survived. The troughs, the laundrettes and the ford were dismounted in the years 1960-70. They had become useless and this inheritance was destroyed by ignorance or rather to encourage the inhabitants to use the water of the public network lately installed…

To the XIX E century, the church should have undergone the same fate. The appropriations had been voted to demolish it and replace it by a church " moderne" Néogothique. But in any thing, misfortune is good, says one, because the events related to the war of 1870 saved the church by stopping the project.
