History

The village draws its origin from the name of Gallo-Roman a Camarius , plus the suffix acum . In 1067 one finds the name in the Camerai form, then at the 12th Chammeré century, in 1209 Chemery, 1303 Chameri, 1384 Chammery-in-the-Montaingne-of-Kidneys, in 1443 Chanmery, to arrive at his contemporary orthography as from the 17th century.

Chamery was set up in Cure in 1419, but we know the name of the priests of the village only since 1669. Four priests marked these 335 last years by four long ministries, they are:

  • Guillaume MARTIN, prior-priest of 1674 to 1718
  • Jean-Jacques CHENARD, prior-priest of 1737 to 1771
  • Jean-Louis LEFEBVRE, priest of 1827 to 1876
  • Charles Arthur THIRIET, priest of 1901 to 1957

they were the pastors of the village during 183 years, that is to say 54% of the ministries since the end of the 17th century to them four. Until 1788 the priests were named by the abbey of Saint Martin's day of Épernay, on this date it was the abbey of Saint-Denis of Rheims which took again the nomination for one short period, the Revolution put a term at these prerogatives. After the Legal settlement the bishops alone named the priests.

Under the Ancien Mode of many ecclesiastical lords divided the seigniory of Chamery. The principal lord was the archbishop of Rheims, follow-up of the abbeys of Saint-Remy cheese, Saint-Nicaise, the chapter of the cathedral of Rheims, the Prior-priest was lord partly him also and finally a very small laic Seigniory which belonged to the 18th century with the Lepoivre family, the 17th century with the Cup and in the previous centuries with families of the Champagne Châlons-in-Champagne nobility.

The town hall is occupied by a mayor in 1790 for the first time in the person of Michel Maillart-Denizet, this last replaces from now on the Syndics, created by Louis XIV in 1702 to be with the head of the village communities. The last Syndic of Chamery was Ponce Lacuisse. For the revolutionary period, Chamery was chief town of canton. The municipal activity is punctuated by a management with the daily newspaper of the businesses of the village, at the 19th century one equips the commune of drinking water fountain, in 1907 it is a laundrette which is created at the edge of old Gloye (communal pond) today disappeared. In 1927 it is the comfort of the electricity which illuminates the village.
