Chambon-Feugerolles is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

The commune located at less than 10 km of Saint-Etienne, is on the axis of communication connecting the Auvergne to the area the Rhone-Alps. The city is located in the middle of the valley of the Ondaine.

Chambon-Feugerolles is crossed by the river Ondaine and of some of its affluents (the Cotatay, the Valchérie, the Malval, the Echapre and the Border-Morning).

History

With the the Middle Ages, the borough existed, dominated by the lord of Feugerolles which had the privilege of justice and the administration. It counted, like many villages, some Forgeron S and manufacturers of crossbow S. At the 16th century, the activity of the Coutellerie develops.

The Métallurgie appears in second half of the 19th century with the installation of the factories Crozet-Fourneyron, Claudinon, Chambert then during the First World War that of Forging mills and the Camargue which produced special Acier S. Manufacture was varied enough: file S, forgings or moulded, elements for the armament, tools… In 1880, the city counted 480 metallurgists (772 in 1912), approximately 1000 forgemen and 900 for the size of the files.

At the XIXe century, Chambon-Feugerolles was the chief town of the canton of the valley of the Ondaine and thus the seat of the civils servant (Justice of the Peace, clerks, notaries, tax collector…).

At that time, the framework of life was rather poor because of a strong industrial activity. It improved under the impulse of the municipality of Pétrus Faure, with which them Chambonnaires renewed their confidence of 1925 with 1971 (except during the war).

Chambon-Feugerolles was born from the fusion of two communes in 1832: Chambon or Cambo, into Gallic, meaning curve of river and Feugerolles or Filicaria meaning fern. Yield in 1843, (with Montaud; Saint-Genest-Malifaux; Valbenoîte) part of their territory which will become Ricamarie.

The June 5th 2007, important believed of the Ondaine and small rus which goes down from the plate of Bessy to the north of Ondaine, caused by important storms, flooded part of the city of Chambon-Feugerolles and caused many damage but any victim. (attention, an error in the France3 source: Ondaine does not have any affluent which bears the name of Ecotay). In spite of the fast character of raw (approximately half an hour), water is assembled until 1,7m in certain dwellings. The weather services had not however raised any alarm.

The commune is served by three line of the STAS (Company of the agglomeration inhabitant of Saint-Etienne) for the account of Saint Etienne Métropole and the line of FOR THE THIRD TIME (tariffing STAS with a Oùrà step)

  • line 1 (Bellevue/Eglise Corbusier) offers a bus every 10 minutes towards Firminy (of 4:30 to 23:00) and towards Bellevue and Ricamarie (of 4:20 to 22:45). The line functions the every day (Sunday, a bus every 20 minutes)
  • line 20 allows the districts of Gafard and Romière to join the center of Chambon directly or of Firminy of the Monday to Saturday. It functions of 5:40 to 20:00 with a bus from 30 to 60 minutes.
  • the line 22 as for it folds back on the center town of Chambon the districts of Michalière and Waters Running. It offers a departure every hour of 7:00 to 19:00.
  • the line of FOR THE THIRD TIME Firminy/Châteaucreux makes it possible to join in 10 minutes the tram (line 4 and 5) with Bellevue or in 4 minutes of center of Firminy. The access to FOR THE THIRD TIME + network STAS is allowed thanks to the Oùra steps. Circulating the every day, the offer is important (21 to go and 25 return), just like the amplitude (of 5:55 to 22:55 towards Bellevue, and of 7:00 to 22:25 towards Firminy)

Personalities related to the commune

  • James Jackson, originating in Lancaster, founds in Trablaine in 1815 a factory which produces for the first time in France of the crucible cast steel.
