Geography

Challans has a privileged position in the western north of the Vendée. The city is located at 40 km of the Roche-sur-Yon, 55 km of Nantes, 15 km of Saint-Jean-of-Mounts and 35 km of Noirmoutier. Geographically, Challans is located in edge of the Breton Marais near the littoral Atlantique.

History

The origins of Challans go back to the Préhistoire as the sites Mégalithique S testify some found in the area. The name of the city would come from the term “kal” which means shelter, village. During the the Middle Ages, the city is located under the control of the Baronnie of Commequiers. It is at this period that the village starts to develop by accommodating its first Foire S. After the dismantling of the Château of Commequiers with 17th, Challans becomes the administrative pole of the area.

  • the Révolution will make of Challans the place chief of the district. But the city will be also touched by the Guerres of the Vendée and of many confrontations the republicans and the royalists will oppose to it.
  • With 19th, the city takes its economic advancement thanks to the development of the lanes and the Railway Nantes - Saint-Gilles.
