Chalabre

Chalabre (occitan: Eissalabra ) is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Chalabrois.

Geography

Chalabre is located in the valley of the Hers-Sharp , with the confluence of this river and two affluents of Right Bank: the Blau, which also pass to Puivert, and the Chalabreil, which seems to have given its name to the village.

History

The village is founded before the 12th century and the grounds belong to the Maison Trencavel. After the Crusade against the Albigensians, the grounds are bequeathed to Pons de Bruyères. In 1279, the village knows important floods. In 1350, the ramparts are finished and form a complete fortification around the village. The downtown area is a country house 13th century.

  • the Château of Chalabre is a castle made up of three parts (13th, 15th and 18th centuries).
  • the Calvaire of Chalabre is located on a hill above Chalabre and consists of a vault. One can observe a splendid panorama there on the the Pyrenees.
  • the Saint-Pierre church goes back to 1552 and one finds there a statue out of wooden of Saint Eloi dating from the century.

  • Capitaine Danjou, whose Chalabre is the birthplace, which it on April 30th, 1863 with the Bataille of Camerone (Mexico), with the head of 2 other officers and 62 legionaries of the 3rd Company of the Foreign Regiment, resisted until death the furious attacks of 2000 Mexicans.
  • Joseph Raynaud
  • Marcel Souquet, born in Chalabre on February 24th, 1914 deceased with Narbonne on June 29th, 1995. Employee S.N.C.F., Resistant very active during the Second world war, he was member of the Socialist party, was assistant of the mayor of Narbonne and General adviser of Narbonne. From 1968 to 1980 it was socialist senator of the Aude.
