The Benedictine abbey of Chair-God in Auvergne was founded in 1043 by Robert de Turlande and some disciples, of which Etienne de Chaliers and certain Delmas. The development of Chair-God, abbey and borough, was very fast by the surge of monks (300 of the XI° with the XIII° century), craftsmen, peasants, tradesmen and even of men of law. Saint Robert de Turlande, the founder, was the son of a rich person knight auvergnat. Robert de Turlande, canon-count de Brioude, after having founded with the money of his own inheritance, a hospital in this city, decides to launch a more important company on the plate of Chair-God, by civilizing the natives who lived there under conditions extrémement precarious. The success of its creation, characterized by the importance of the chaplaincy (more than 4000 assisted per annum) and of hotel trade (travellers then pilgrims of Robert saint) allowed the foundation of many dependences. The mobility of Chair-God included/understood one century later ten abbeys and three hundred and forty priories. In 1067, the new abbey is about to become, in Auvergne, equalizes it of Cluny. It profits from important donations big families: Mercoeur of the Vault-Chilhac, counts of Auvergne de Vodable or Polignac close to Puy. Several popes will pass with Chair-God: Urbain II, Calixte II, Innocent II or Clement VI which will be made bury in the abbey one. The abbey will be then subjected by Rançon of Montclar to the Saint-Beno4it cheese rule. And, in 1640, the cardinal of Richelieu, angry of his permanent insubordination, will bring it closer to the congregation to Saint-Maur. In 1516, like much of others, the Legal settlement makes it fall under the system from Commende. the most famous abbots commendataires will follow one another it, without coming often there: the cardinal Adrien Gouffier de Boissy, Angouleme, two Valois, cardinals of Richelieu and Mazarin, Mancini, Rochefoucauld, two Rohan-Soubise and Rohan-Guéméné. Each April 24th, the general chapter of the Saint-Robert brought together the monks of the mother abbey, the abbots and the priors of the subsidiary houses, to manage the unit, to manage the conflicts and to pay the heavy royalty with the pope. Feudal lord, the abbot of Chair-God, with an escort of " thirteen or fourteen chevaux" , counted among the largest barons of Auvergne. The abbey of Chair-God who still counts forty monks to the Revolution, will not survive this one. Currently a small community of the Brothers of Midsummer's Day, are restoring a monastic life in an apostolate of proximity. The Benedictine abbey and the city of Chair-God (43160) are known for the macabre dance, the curious room of the echoes, the tapestry " Appearance of Christ with Marie-Madeleine" and the Festival of music created in 1966 by Georges Cziffra.
