Chain of Bernina

The chain of Bernina is a solid mass of the the central Eastern Alps. It rises between the Italy (Lombardy) and the Suisse (Canton of the Grisons).

It belongs to the the rhetic Alps.

The Piz Bernina is the culminating point of the solid mass, to which it gives its name.

Geography

Situation

The solid mass lies between the High-Engadine in north and the valley of the Adda (Valteline) in the south, upstream of the Lac of Like, and is surrounded by the Chaîne of Oberhalbstein and the Chaîne of Albula in north, the Chaîne of Livigno in the east (beyond the Col of Bernina), the the Alps bergamasks in the south and the the Alps lépontines in the west.

Glaciers

The solid mass, from its raised altitude, comprises important glaciers. That of Morteratsch is bulkiest and the broader third of the Western Alps. It is located on the northern slope of the peaks ranging between Piz Bernina and Piz Palü, while passing by Piz Zupò. Since Piz Argient until the face of the glacier, it measures 7 km, for uneven of 2000 Mr.
