Chaim Weizmann
Chaim Weizmann or Haim Weizmann (November 27th 1874 - November 9th 1952), chemist and British politician then Israeli, was the first president of the State of Israel between 1949 and 1952, elected the May 16th 1948.
Professional life
Chaim Weizmann was born in Bielorussia in the small village from Motol (Motyli) close to Pinsk. It is graduate of chemistry of the University of Freiburg in Suisse in 1900, then sign at the University of Geneva of 1901 with 1903 then at the University of Manchester as from 1904. On this date, it settles in Great Britain.
It becomes prone of its Majesty in 1910, and invests in the British effort of war during the First World War. In 1916, it develops a mechanism bacterial fermentation making it possible to produce broad quantities of substances, such as acetone, essential with the manufacture of explosives TNT for the Allies.
Political life
Chaim Weizmann adopted the Sionisme as of the beginnings of this one.
In 1903, it is one of the founders of the " Démocratique" fraction; , which militates in favor of the " Zionism pratique" , and which is one of the bases of the party of the general Sionistes, a party liberal and moderated Zionist, created with the beginning of the year 1920.
He works with Lord Balfour with the drafting of the Déclaration Balfour of 1917, which grants a Jewish national hearth in Palestine.
The January 3rd 1919, it signs, with the king Fayçal I of Iraq, the Accord Fayçal-Weizmann of 1919 governing the relations between Juifs and Arabs with the the Middle East and the the Middle East. The same year he declares We ask for the possibility of of installing us in Palestine and, when we are the majority, we will claim the government of it .
Starting from 1920, it is with the head of the world Organization Zionist, assuming the responsibility for president by twice, of 1920 to 1931, then of 1935 to 1946.
In 1921, it assembles with Albert Einstein the project of the Hebraic Université of Jerusalem. In 1929, he becomes president of the Jewish Agency.
At the time of a meeting with the US president Harry Truman, Weizmann obtains the support of the the United States for the creation of a future State of Israel.
Following the declaration of independence in 1948, he becomes the first president of the State of Israel, purely honorary title and not having real political significance.
It founds the Institut Weizmann with Rehovot, a scientific research institute. He is the author of a great number of publications in scientific magazines.
He is the uncle of Ezer Weizman, which will become the seventh Israeli president.
