History
Of its calcareous ground, Chailley holds its name, Caliacum , Challiacum ; of its monastic ground origins, its localities: " small the déserts" , " large the usages" ; its farm cart tracks, which skirted pieces in thin straps, sign of a rational agriculture introduced by the monastic colonization of the " second époque" , that of the beginning of the 12th century. Companion of Holy Bernard, Guichard, abbot of Pontigny, and its successors could be made give the Pays of Othe and established Barns with Beugnon there, Chailley… Around these establishments, where a hundred Convers led the peasants to work, the clearings and the forestry development developed on which the history of Chailley is dependant until the beginning of this century. The trades of the forest occupied, in 1852,440 loggers and coalmen and contributed to the activity of the lime kilns, of tileries. The borough then counted 1.300 inhabitants and there was what to be occupied in the spinning mill with the trade, auxiliary of Trojan hosiery, the clog factory, the factory of porte-monnaie driven by the vapor, in agriculture where a quarter of the population worked, the craft industry and the trade. An active market served Boeurs-in-Othe, Arces, Sormery and other communes; three hotels, the hotel Commercial, the hotel of the Union and the hotel of the White Horse lodged the travellers and the tradesmen; in 1833, the factor went to foot each day to Saint-Florentin and returned from there to make its distribution and, until 1910, diligence transported each day the travellers of Chailley in Brienon for 12 francs is approximately 2 euros nowadays. Ten years later, a page was turned. The collecting of milk reduced the role of the market which disappeared. Industrial capitalism pushed the men with the factory; in 1914, it pushes them with the war. All that is known. In 1931, there was no more that 10 loggers, a doctor instead of three, more market, the population had fallen to 542 inhabitants. However, the decrease stopped there and since nearly 80 years, the population was maintained and even grew these last years to 630 inhabitants in 1979. New activities were created and Chailley remains still an alive borough. (Text extracted Friendly from the country from Othe from chailley)
