Chadrel Rinpoché

Chadrel Rinpoché was the abbot in exercise of the monastery of Tashilhunpo to Shigatse, the seat of the Panchen LAMA.

After the disappearance of the 10th Panchen LAMA, Lobsang Trinley Lhündrub Chökyi Gyaltsen, the Chinese Communist party charged Chadrel Rinpoché, the person in charge of the monastery of the Tashilhunpo, believer that it was favorable for them, to find the reincarnation of Panchen LAMA. The 14th Dalaï Lama proposed with Beijing to dispatch a delegation of high religious dignities for " assister" Chadrel Rinpoché. But the offer was rejected by China, which qualified it the “superfluous one”. The Dalaï Lama and the authorities Tibetans start to organize research to find its reincarnation according to the traditions Tibetans. The May 14th 1995, after having studied the various candidates, young boy a six year old was officially recognized by the Dalaï Lama as being the 11th Panchen LAMA. It is named Gendhun Choekyi Nyima. Chadrel Rinpoché, chief of the Chinese official commission responsible for the research of the reincarnation of the last Panchen LAMA, was stopped with Chengdu the May 18th 1995 whereas it returned of Beijing to Shigatse, four days after the advertisement of discovered 11th reincarnation of the Panchen LAMA, the May 14th 1995 with Dharamsala. It was taken along to Beijing and put at the secrecy. The Chinese authorities spent many months to admit the arrest of Chadrel Rinpoché.

He was accused of collaboration with Dalaï Lama during the procedure of research. Chadrel Rinpoché was condemned to 6 years of prison. According to information obtained by TCHRD, Chadrel Rinpoché was released with one year of delay, in January 2002 of the prison number 3 of Chuandong in the province of Sichuan. For as much, it was placed at once under house arrest. It is now 67 years old.

Jampa Chung, secretary of the monastery of Tashilhunpo and Samdrup, a business man who worked for the 10th Panchen LAMA were also condemned to 4 and 2 years of prison

Lodi Gyari Rinpoché, representative of Dalaï Lama in the USA had declared " Chadrel Rinpoché respected only the religious tradition usual Tibetan in her efforts to find the reincarnation of 10th Panchen Lama".
