Chablais
The Chablais is an old province of the Duché of Savoy having Thonon-the-Baths for historical capital. This area is currently divided into three territories, the Savoyard Chablais, the Valaisan Chablais, the Chablais of Vaud and depends on two countries: the France (department of the Haute-Savoie) and the Swiss (cantons of the Were worth and of Vaud).
In XIe century, the Chablais indicated all the territory extending on two banks from the Rhone, between Evian and Vevey and called “top” or “head of the Lake”. This term would have been employed for the first time by a civil servant of Louis Débonnaire in 814. The Latin name Caput lacus ( caput iaci or caput lago ), became in the vulgar language lay Capo' ( lay = lake in Arpitan). By the phonetic play “p” becomes another labial “B”, from where lay Cab' then lay Chab' .

History
Chablais has its origin on both sides the Rhone, at the “top” of the Léman. It had as a capital Saint-Maurice-in-Chablais and gathered 30 communes. In XIe century, it becomes a possession of the Maison of Savoy. Amédée III will incorporate in this territory known as of the “Chablais Old man” the area of Thonon with Douvaine. By opposition, the latter will take the name of “New Chablais”. The princes of the House of Savoy remained on the spot claiming their presence, in particular with the Château of Chillon, in the country of Vaud, and with the Château of Feast, close to Thonon. The Abbey of Saint-Maurice d' Agaune, was founded in 515 by the future king burgonde Saint Sigismond with the site of an older sanctuary sheltering the remainders of Maurice, martyr of the 3rd century, set up by Theodore or Théodule, first known bishop of Were worth.
The count Amédée III of Savoy which owing to the fact that the Maison of Savoy had, since the emperor Conrad Salic the, a right of government on Chablais, took pretext of a bad administration of the imperial lieutenant to seize the provinces of Chablais, then of the Vallée of Aoste, and to grant the title of “duke of Chablais”. In 1128, it increases its field while adding to its government - what one called the “Chablais Old man” - the area extending from the Arve until the Dranse d' Abondance, thus forming “New Chablais”, whose Saint-Maurice d' Agaune became the capital.
In 1475, the Were worth years, following the victory of Planta, acquire part of the Chablais Old man. However, Monthey and the lower part of Were worth remain under the authority of the House of Savoy, but the Bernois occupy the following year Chablais of Vaud, which they must reassign in Savoy in 1478, while preserving Aigle, Bex, Ollon and Ormonts.
In 1536, Bern declares the war with the duke of Savoy; the troops led by Naégali cross the country of Vaud without meeting much resistance. Naégali occupies all new Chablais until Thonon while passing by Geneva where it is accommodated as a liberator.
The Valaisans accommodate the news of the Bernese invasion badly. After the catch of the country of Vaud, they worry and fear that Bern does not occupy Monthey and the lemanic area of Savoy. After having informed the duke of it of Savoy, the Valaisans go down to occupy the territory of Saint-Maurice to Evian to defend it and ensure the maintenance of the faith, with the promise to return it later to the Duke, against refunding of their expenses.
The communes of Saint-Gingolph (February 1st), Evian (9), the communities of the valley of Abundance, Vacheresse and Bonnevaux (20), then those of Saint-Jean-in Aulps and Biot (the 22) adhere very quickly to the new authorities. In 1553, Emmanuel-Phillibert of Savoy wishes to take again the States lost by his/her father. He claims the inheritance of his ancestors in lemanic area. But its old subjects of the canton of Vaud do not wish any more to become again Savoyards nor catholic.
In 1564, a compromise is found, and the October 30th, 1564, the treaty of Lausanne is signed. Bern restores with the country of Gex and Gaillard, Chablais Western (or baillage of Thonon) but guard the possessions of Vaud.
A treaty, ratified with Sion the March 23rd, 1569 and with Chambéry, on April 4th, definitively fixes the border of the two States at Morge of Saint-Gingolph. Were worth restores with the duke of Savoy the governments of Evian and Midsummer's Day d' Aulps, but guard that of Monthey.
