Chabanais

Chabanais is a common French, located in the department of the Charente and the area Poitou-Charentes. Chabanès in Occitan. To also see in the commune: the hamlet of Grenord. Bottom Latin capanna (=cabane).

The May 5th 1997, a Tornade of the F2 type swept the city and its surroundings.

Geography

Typical location of the heart of the Charente-Limousine or High-Charente, Chabanais preserves a certain activity by its position on the main axis of circulation of the RN 141 Saintes - Angouleme - Limoges - Clermont-Ferrand (RCEA). A long time center of the Charente-Limousine, Chabanais seems today, to direct itself towards a tourist step, centered on the valorization of the “natural” inheritance. The site of the dams Lavaud and the Farmhouse-Chaban (High-Charente Lakes), Arboretum of the Evergreen oak, the Forest of Étagnac, the valley of the Vienna, the Mounts of Fair, are as many stakes to mark out this orientation. The Vienna Chabanais division, medium of the bridge representing the center of the village. Chabanais is located on the first granitic “hillock” of the Massif Central, in the influence of the crater of the meteorite of Rochechouart.

History

The village was born from the regrouping of fishermen, at the edge of the river (the Vienna), from where probably the origin of the name Capanna or, then, Cabanens, Cabanis, Chabanois. The first dwellings were Undoubtedly “wood huts” assembled on Piloti S., the Pêcheur S lived on the surrounding heights and they used these Cabane S only for their activity of fishing. Chabanais would thus have been built on the northern bank of the river, higher than the easily flooded southern bank, the two banks crossing itself easily with ford because of the rock bed of the Vienna in its Limousin course.

Jean-Baptiste of Quintinie

Jean-Baptiste of Quintinie, person in charge of the kitchen garden of the King (Louis XIV), native of Chabanais becomes the brand image of the village; if the objectives of the time just as the statute of the individual were different, Quintinie does not remain about it less “garden”.

Others

Chabanais was a marquisat, prerogative of one of the many sons of Colbert, celebrates it minister of Louis XIV. Under the Revolution, the young Alexandre de Chabanais had to emigrate with his mother.
