Chañaral

Chañaral is an island located at six kilometers off the Chilean coast, with approximately hundred kilometers in the north of the Serena. With the Choros island and the Damas island, it forms the national Reserve of penguins of Humboldt, managed by the Chilean forest Corporation. The three islands shelter an important population of this species of penguins, but also of many species like the Loutre of Chile and Pelecanoides garnotii. These last years, the reserve knew a strong increase in the tourist activities, in particular because of the presence of large dolphins.

Of a surface of 6,55 km ², Chañaral is largest of the islands of the reserve. The access is very restricted there. It consists of two plates: the principal plate, between fifty and seventy meters of altitude, is divided into two parts, Eastern and Western, by a second plate whose altitude is higher than hundred meters. The vegetation of the two plates differs considerably: that of the principal plate is dominated by the undergrowth and cactées, while one finds only some small groups of cactus on the higher plate.

Chañaral has an airport (code AITA: CNR).
