Chéraute is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
Its name Basque is Sohüta .

The commune is crossed by the brook the Lausset, which are thrown in the Gave d' Oloron, and by its affluents, the brooks aiguette and Ascania, and the affluent of this last, the brook Gaillan.Ambelseko Erreka, affluent of the brook Ibarle, which emerges in Lausset, also sprinkles the grounds of the commune.

History
Chéraute is old a Baronnie vassal of the Vicomté of Drunk.

Civil inheritance
Protohistoric fortifications , registered with the historic buildings in 1983, are present at the locality Castelgayha.The family of the Bleated-Chéraute had the castle of the XVIIe century which is drawn up on the territory of the commune.
Religious heritage
The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre church, whose origins go back to the end of the Moyen-âge, was increased at the end of the XIXe century and its bell-tower and its porch were rebuilt at the beginning of the XXe siècle.Our-Lady-of-Door vault was built in 1936.

The commune is located on the way of the 16th stage of the Tour de France 2007 which will take place on July 25th. The course of 218 kilometers will connect Orthez to Gourette - Collar of Aubisque.

- Jon Mirande, (Paris, 1925 - 1972) is a Basque writer, born within a drunk family clay crusher which emigrated with the French capital in the search of work. His/her father, Jean Mirande, were originating in Garindein and his mother, Marie d' Ayphasorho, of Chéraute.
