History

Chénérailles (Canalis) chief town of canton of the Digs to 19 kilometers in the north of Aubusson, on a hill dominating of the ponds from which an affluent leaves Voueize. Its origin is extremely old. It goes certainly up at the time Roman, as prove it several ballot boxes full with ashes, frays to medals of the Maximilien emperors, Gallien, Gordien, Licinius, etc that one found there. It was formerly a strong city, in the middle of which there was a raised rock, whose top was crowned by a castle destroyed for a long time, and whose site is nowadays occupied by the parish church St Barthelemy (13th century) which shelters a high relief dedicated to Saint Barthelemy. Chénérailles suffered much from the war against the English at the beginning of the 15th century. It was even almost entirely destroyed, but Jacques and Bernard of Armagnac, Counts of Walk, made it rebuild year 1430 with 1440. The first of these Counts of Walk confirmed several privileges which had been granted to Chénérailles, in 1265, by Hugues XII of Lusignan. In 1592, this city supported a seat for the League; she opposed to the royalists a rigorous resistance, went only after one blockade eight month, when the garrison and the inhabitants had exhausted all their means of subsistence.
