History
Located on a slope which dominates the Black Valley, Châtre could be in the beginning, a Celtic refuge, a Oppidum Gallic or a fortress of the Middle Ages. Many historians contributed their share in the search of his origins.
Châtre in Bas-Berry was born from a Roman Camp for some, Gallic for others, from where its appearance under the name of “Castra” in the acts of files of XVIe.
Pierquin of Gembloux, archeologist, who published a History of Châtre in 1860, thinks that an abbey founded towards 640, was placed there under the protection of Vincent.
According to Leon Mauduit, historian, in his History of Indre appeared about 1879, the site of the city would have been the center of a camping, a refuge of the Gallic troops fleeing Jules César.
Emile Chenon, historian, deceased in 1927, allot the origin of the city to a Roman camp which protected the passage from Indre, on the great way Nickle silver-Châteaumeillant. This military origin points out the weapons of the city: “of sinople with three money tents”.
The name of “Castrated” appears in the acts of files of XVIe. About 1010, Raoul II of Déols creates the baronnie of Châtre for his Ebbes son. In this baronnie the strongholds and seigniories of Sarzay are located, Briantes, Angibault, Saint Martin's day de Thevet, Maugivray, Montlevic, Virolan, Bellefont, Ars, the Freehold, Nohant, Vieilleville, the Plum with the Pot. The seigniory concerned princes de Déols and the lords of Chateauroux.
Burned in 1152 per Louis VII, submitted to Philippe-Auguste in 1209, “closed well and walled well” in XVe, touched by the plague in 1629, the city preserves many traces of its medieval past.
