Châtenay-Malabry

Châtenay-Malabry is a common French of the department of the Hauts-de-Seine of the area Île-de-France.

Its inhabitants is called the Châtenaisiens .

History

The first mention of Châtenay was made by the Irminon abbot at the 9th century, under the name Castanetum . The ground belonged for its greater part to the chapter of the cathedral of Paris until the Révolution.

Châtenay and its common neighbor Antony proceeded in 1936 with an important exchange of grounds. Châtenay yielded its rights on the Parc of Seals to the profit of Antony which yielded most of its territory to the North-West.

Voltaire remained there in exile starting from 1719 (it is, in addition, probable that it was born there), of return in the paternal house (castle of the Rosery).

Chateaubriand lived there of 1807 to 1816, in its property of the Valley-with-Wolves , located in the Valley of Aulnay.

Origin of the name

The name Châtenay surely comes from the Latin castellanum which means small castle and Roman camp, which makes some go up the origin with the I {{er}} or at the 2nd century. One found Gallo-Roman, but such prehistoric and Gallic objects besides.

One evoked formerly an origin related to the word Châtaignier . But it is known today that the culture of the chestnut is relatively recent in this area.

As for Malabry , that wants to say badly located, bad ground, to undoubtedly connect with the many slopes and coasts of the territory of this commune.
