Châtellerault
Châtellerault (in Poitevin-saintongeais Chateleràud ) is a common French, located in the department of the Vienna and the area Poitou-Charentes. Its inhabitants is called Châtelleraudais.
Its currency is " The city of the good accueil" or " The city which goes with its temps" .
Geography
Châtellerault, chief town of district, second city of the department in the face after Poitiers, are located on the Vienna, with its junctions with the Clain, Ozon (or Auzon, according to the orthography) and the Envigne, from the upstream towards the downstream.Several bridges are thrown on Vienna, of which:

the Lyautey bridge, built in the years 1960,
- the bridge Camille de Hogues, 1900 (first entirely in Reinforced concrete in France)
- the bridge Henri IV, 1565 with 1609, more length in France before construction of that of Avignon, 144 m length.
With the foot of this last are held the Cognet island and further downstream, the island Holy-Catherine, artificially created by the digging of the level of the Mill of the Nourished Good.
Châtellerault is served by the A10, by exchangers 26 and 27.
She is located at about thirty kilometers of Poitiers, and at 70 kilometers of Tours.
History
The city draws its name from its founder, a Viscount called Airaud, who, in 952, issued this Viscount hereditary property, and came to install its castle on these grounds, Castrum Airaldi in Latin. The contraction of these two words, Castrum Airaldi, will become Castel Airaud, then Châtel Araud, then the current name of the city: Châtellerault!-
At the 11th century, the city returns by alliance to the family of Rochefoucault.
- In 1370, the city is attacked and plundered by the Breton ones of Bertrand of Guesclin.
- In 1482, the Viscount of Châtellerault is attached to the royal Domaine.
- In 1487, Charles VII offers the Viscount to Jean of Armagnac.
- In 1505, Anne of France, duchess of Bourbon, takes the possession of it.
- In 1514, François I {{er}} raises the Viscount with the row of Duché to the profit of François de Bourbon.
- In 1531, the city is briefly attacked by the plague.
- In 1549, Henri II yields the duchy to the Scottish count James Hamilton, which he entrusts to his son, the count d' Arran, who founds the Protestantisme there.
- In 1575, Châtellerault becomes a commune.
- In 1597 and 1598, the Parliament of reformed France creates the Édit of Nantes (which should thus have been called Edit of Châtellerault).
- In 1630, the city is touched by a terrible epidemic of Black Death…

Demography
Economy
Munitions factory.Following the First World War, the French Army wants to be modernized for its partially exceeded material. The Cauchat light machine gun was not very easy to arm and was victim of a frequent stopping. It thus will start to change its rifles and machine-guns.
The Munitions factory of Châtellerault will produce as from 1924 the Mac 24/29.
Today " Manu" contain a skating rink, the Museum Car Motor bike Bicycle, the " 2 tours" (a platform built on two old chimneys and being used as panorama on the city), the Center of the files of armament (CAA), the future media library, the national school of the circus and several sports halls.

Personalities
Several personalities, artists or sportsmen were born or lived in Châtellerault:
- Jean II of Harcourt, Viscount of Châtellerault
- Jean Whetstone, Pasteur and theologist protesting
- Clement Janequin, musician, type-setter of the Rebirth, priest.
- Rene Descartes (1596-1650), philosopher, mathematician and physicist, author of the Discourse on Method (1637). Even if it were not born in Châtellerault, Rene Descartes passed his childhood there, and its family were originating in the city.
- Jean of the Fountain, writer, fabulist, it would have written to his fable small fish and the sinner in the park of the castle of the orchard at the time of its visit to his/her cousin Jean Pidoux in 1663.
- Rodolphe Salis (1851-1897), founder of the cabaret Parisien " The Noir" Cat; in 1881.
- Rene Herault, politician, born in Châtellerault in 1837, deputy, under Secretary of State to finances.
- Raoul Péret, politician, born in Châtellerault in 1870, appointed of Vienna, chairs of the National Assembly, Minister commercial, finances and justice.
- Camille Guerin (1872-1961), researcher, Co-discoverer of the vaccine b.c.g
- Robert Thuillier (1910-2004), photographer, inventor of the technique of the diaporama in 1950.
- Luc Montagnier, professor at the institute Pasteur, researcher.
- Dominique Jamet, journalist and writer, former president of the public corporation of the Library of France (city council man of 1983 to 1989)
- Sylvain Chavanel, racing cyclist, champion of France of against the watch, 2005 and 2006.
- Sebastien Chavanel, racing cyclist, victorious of the cut of France 2007.

- the bridge Camille-with-Hogues, first civil bridge in Reinforced concrete of France builds in 1899. Its preceding names, New bridge and bridge of Manufacture, recall that this work is built to disenclose the district of Manufacture by offering an rapid access by the new districts of Right Bank. Built in four months under the direction of the architect and contractor François Hennebique, the work, broad 8 meters and 150 meters length, underwent regular tests of solidity, of which the procession with the given rhythm step of 250 soldiers or the passage of carriages of 16 tons. Classified historic building on November 22nd, 2002, labellized " Inheritance of the XXe siècle" , it is currently in the course of restoration.
