Châtelguyon

Châtelguyon is a common French, located in the department of the Puy-de-Dôme and the area of Auvergne. Châtelguyon belongs to the urban surface of Clermont-Ferrand.

The inhabitants are called the Châtelguyonnais but are very often called the Brayaud S for historical and geographical reasons.

The municipality chose the orthography Châtel-Guyon , however this designation was not officially required.

Toponymy

Populated of Brayauds

Inhabitants of Châtelguyon (étymologiquement, the castle of a " certain" Handlebar /Guy) is called the Brayaud S, of the name of the country of Brayaud which extends around the city. The peasants of surrounding very a long time carried “braies”, kind of narrow pants, like their ancestors the Gaulois.

Geography

Châtelguyon is with 20 kilometers in the north of Clermont-Ferrand, and with 7 kilometers in the North-West of Riom. This city is with 32 kilometers of the Puy-de-Dôme.

Châtelguyon is a flowered Ville (3 flowers), which lengthens at the edge of the Rivière Sardon.

History

The name of Châtelguyon comes from " Castle of Guy". Guy II of Auvergne, Count d' Auvergne of 1194 with 1222, made build a bastion in 1185 on the hill of the Calvaire, to protect Riom. With his/her Robert brother, bishop of Clermont, it disputed much. The King of France thus confiscated his field to him. The Château disappeared today.

In 1198, the name of the village was Castrum Guidonis, then Châteauguion at the 15th century, Chastelguion at the 17th century and Châtel-Guyon at the 19th century.

The communes of Châtelguyon and Saint-Hippolyte amalgamated in 1972.

Blazon

The weapons of Châtelguyon are the same ones as those the family of the counts d' Auvergne and thus of the province, since the village took the name of the count Guy II at the 13th century because of the presence of one of its castles.

The church Holy-Anne and the martyrdom

The church Holy-Anne was built in 1845 on the Martyrdom. She was renovated in 1956. The Vitraux of the church in Baccarat crystal are very beautiful.

On the Martyrdom, there is a cross missions since 1884. August 15th, people ravel with Flambeau X to the cross.

At the top of the Martyrdom, there is a Table of orientation where the elements of the landscape are located: the valley of the sources, the Chalusset mount, the Puy-de-Dôme

Thermal baths and the casino

At the end of the 17th century, the source S spout out with a particular noise and are called the “Gargouilloux”. The first source became exhausted in 1870.

In 1817, the city decides to build an establishment of baths. Towards 1830, the sources are exploited by Camille Brosson which builds a hydropathic establishment. In 1900, Châtelguyon becomes a great thermal spa because one builds a Théâtre, Large the Thermes and the Casino.

In 1886, Guy of Maupassant remained in Châtelguyon; it will evoke several times the station in its work Littéraire.

There are 12 thermal springs which soigent especially the Maladie S gastro-intestinal. The Eau X have many Magnésium. Their temperature goes from 18°C to 37°C.

The valley of Prades and the castle of Chazeron

The valley of Prades is places of interest for impassioned excursion.

In 1940, Blum, Daladier, Paul Reynaud and Gamelin were locked up in Chazeron because they were considered to be responsible for the defeat of June 1940 by the Régime of Vichy.

Today, the owners of Chazeron installed in this Château, the CRYSTAL (Research center and of Scientific informations Technical, Artistiques and Literary) which exposes and sells works and Meuble S, organizes spectacles.

The valley of the Without-Concern

The Vallée of the Without-Concern is traversed by the Sardon which crosses Châtelguyon. The Ruisseau ends in the cascade of the Squirrel.

Wood which recovers the two slopes of the valley formerly formed part of the property of Chazeron.
