History
Old village strengthened near Chaumont, Châteauvillain settled around an ancient castrum, the " Castrum Villanum" , station strengthened at the 11th century. It is mentioned the construction of a castle by Hugues III of Broyes, lord of Broyes and Châteauvillain, in 1160. A keep and an enclosure locking up the castle were thus built in 1160, around the district of Crées. Still today, the narrow lanes of Crées point out the environment of the old commercial center. In 1286, Jehan the Blind man, comrade in arms of Saint Louis in the Croisade granted a charter to the city of which he was the lord.
In 1620, the county of Châteauvillain is bought by Nicolas of Hospital, marquis de Vitry. In 1699, Châteauvillain is bought by the count de Toulouse and is set up in Duchy-peerage in 1703. The duchy passes then to his/her son, the duke of Penthièvres and is allocated to the duke of Orleans, future king Louis Philippe after the Révolution.
The principal curiosity of Châteauvillain is in the Park with the Deer: created in 1655 by the François-Marie lord who made brick up a wall of six kilometers out of stone to be able to devote itself to his passion of hunting.
Planted splendid trees with the various gasolines, this space of more than 270 hectares counts a hundred deer which live in harmony with nature and the man.
