Châteauneuf-on-Charente

Châteauneuf-on-Charente is a common French, located in the department of the Charente and the area Poitou-Charentes. Its inhabitants is the Castelnoviens .

Geography

In the middle of the area of the cognac and pineau, Châteauneuf, strong of a market and a swimming pool outdoor is located between Angouleme (Prefecture) and Cognac (sub-prefecture) of about 30 km each one. It is crossed by the Charente which borders its municipal camp-site and offers to the visitors a small sand beach end. One can reach it by the road but also by inland waterway, by renting a barge in particular, or by railway way, since served several times per day by T.E.R.

History

  • a prehistoric habitat is attested by the discovery of flint and painted caves.
  • One also observes a Roman presence.
  • the first castle, on an island of Charente, is destroyed by a fire in 1081. The new castle was built on the slope and bore the name of “châteauneuf”.
  • Châteauneuf belongs first of all to the Taillefer counts d' Angoulême. The count of Angouleme sells the grounds in 1098. Châteauneuf will return to Angouleme in 1242, thanks to its repurchase by Isabelle of Angouleme married to Hugues X of Lusignan, which will give to the seigneurery to one their juniors, Geoffroy de Lusignan. From this last come the blazon from the city and its currency " Which fears less death than the lions ".
  • the bridge on Charente, very old, was with the Middle Ages the only stone bridge on the Charente between Cognac and Angouleme. It had a great importance: it was kept by English by the Traité of Brétigny (1360) and taken again in 1380 with destruction partial of the church.
  • the Saint-Pierre church will be again damaged at the time of the revolts against the Gabelle of 1555 with 1560 and at the time of the wars of religion. Mérimée was the craftsman of its repair.
  • the city was initially called Berdeville, then Châteauneuf. Under the Revolution, it became Val Charente for finally taking again the name of “Châteauneuf”.

At the 20th century, the municipality seems to have wished to modify the colors of them.

Places and monuments

  • the Church Saint Pierre is remarkable by its statuary and in particular the rider of the frontispiece, which represents the 1st Christian Roman Emperor, Constantin, crushing the Paganisme. This statue is in reference instead of construction of this church, since it was built on a place of pagan worship, with thus for goal of éradiquer the paganism of the campaigns. It is also remarkable by its high frontage of 24 meters, divided into 3 vertical parts and 3 horizontal parts, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful frontages of Charente. This one is partly Romance, partly Gothic with a Gothic bell-tower.

  • Its small sand beach end at the edge of Charente offers to the walkers one moment relaxation and a pretty sight on the Mattard island. The Bath of the Ladies proposes plays and a " pré" for the children (tables of tennis, balloons, refreshment bar the summer…).

  • Of beautiful cliffs is also present at the entry of the city, place where the day the first inhabitants of this city transfer, with the Neolithic era, and who offer a superb panorama.
  • One can also go on two small islands, the islands of Fuie, which are used as landing stage for river tourism, and where generally come to play about swans and ducks…
