Ceyzériat

Ceyzériat is a common Frenchwoman, chief town of canton of the Ain. The canton, which belongs to the district of Borough-in-Bresse, comprises 11 communes and 7  898 inhabitants.

Geography

At 8 km in the east of Borough-in-Bresse, Ceyzériat is located on the first buttresses of the Revermont (constituting the Western edge of the the Jura).

The river Vallière takes its source in the commune before being thrown in the Reyssouze.

History

Hippolyte Paul Jayr, minister twice under the Monarchy of July, was mayor of the commune at the end of the 19th century.

Economy

Small shops of proximity, zones of activities, riding school, cookie factory. Agriculture in strong decline. This village was wine in the past. The exploitation of the vine stopped between the two wars. However there remain a few arpents of vine nowadays.

  • the St. Lawrence church from which construction began in 1417 has four stained glasses of the 15th century. Its bell-tower whose octagonal arrow and glaze of tiles, is twisted, date of the 19th century, one calls this type of bell-tower, a twisted Clocher. It was built voluntarily twisted by a companion carpenter, the frame was reinforced later on by pieces of wood (one by face) in order to prevent a stressing of torsion. Only the first third is twisted, as with the church of Attignat, which dates from the same time.
  • the Ligne of Carpates passes by Ceyzériat to the bridge of the vintagers , definitively dismounted on October 10th, 2007 to allow work of line TGV Paris-Geneva.
