Cesenatico

Cesenatico is a common of the Province of Forlì-Césène in the area Emilie-Romagna in Italy.

Geography

Located at the edge of the Adriatic between Ravenne and Rimini, Cesenatico is the ancient port of Césène (in Italian Cesena ) to 15 kilometers from there.

History

Cesenatico is a built port-channel, at the request of César Borgia, in 1502 according to the original plans of Léonard de Vinci (plane which is with the National library of Paris). Port of Césène since 1302, a channel was to connect the two cities and the sea.

The structure of the port-channel thus réalié, with the advantage of escaping the stranding of which are victims the majority of the Italian ports. Recent work (finished in 2005) concerned the realization, at the end of the channel, of doors which will be closed for the period of the " high eaux" to protect the city from the floods.

Economy

Fishing port since the origin, Cesenatico is an important seaside resort. From the XIX century end the tourist development begin with the arrival, on the beaches sunny of the Czechoslovakian and Italian nobility. In the years 1960, déveleoppement includes of the emplor by the arrival in mass of German, Italian and French tourists (of which majority of Italian origin).

The balneal infrastructures of develop, too often in an anarchistic form caused by the financial speculations; with the imade of the districts of " Valverde" and " Villamarina" , where the narrowness of the streets, the lack of parking bay and the little of distance between the buildings, always do not allow the hoped relaxation.

Of 23  000 inhabitants in winter, the station passes to more 300  000 in summer season. The station counts 4 districts balneal: Zadina, Cesenatico, Valverde and Villamarina.

Today (at the beginning of 2007), the city offers more than 7 kilometers of sand beaches end, broad and sunny, with 354 balneal inns (pensions) and 127 establishments.

In addition to the traditional tourist établissemnts, Cesenatico includes/understands also colonies intended for the children of the cities, like the colony AGIP (oldest), and in the west (Cervia side) multitudes of colonies built after the last war and intended for the children of the big cities of the interior.

Teaching

Cesenatico is a university pole of Césène and Bologna. The studies relate primarily to the Aquaculture and the Ichtyologie.

Monuments and museums

Museum of the marine

  • Port-channel with its flotilla of fishing vessels
  • Museum of the navy. It is at the beginning of the channel, with the entry of the city. It shelters a collection of old fishing vessels and maritime transport. It is the only museum of Italy with open sky. One can see the various boats utiliées at the time, whether it is for the fishing or the transport of freight. The veils have the characteristic to have a whole a color different. Each color belonged to a family of sailors and were recognizable by far, in particular by the wives and children who awaited the return of the sailor.

The place of preserves

The “ preserves ” or more exactly “the refrigerators” are appeared as a truncated puit with an opening a few meters in diameter and a low wall which exceeds ground of a small meter. Very diffuse on the littoral romagnol already as from the XVI century for the conservation of fish, the commune of Cesenatico counted, a score as of these “preserves” in activity in the XIX century half and until in the years 1930.

The fish was put in layers alternated with snow or ice collected at the beginning of the winter, then covered with a layer of ground or sand to guarantee the insulation and finally covered with a last packed layer of snow. The fish thus treated could preserve itself until July. These “preserves” allowed the consumption and the trade of fish during the winter months, where the exits at sea were made impossible.

There remain currently three as of these wells, restored, of which is inside a building of origin and the two others with open sky. They are visible on the small place of the market with vegetables, known as “place of preserves”, just behind the fish shop.

Pantani space

Since the beginning of the year 2006 is opened with the public l'" Space Pantani" beside the station. One finds there a museum which contains relics, the bicycles and objects having belonged to the champion cycle Marco Pantani, died tragically on February 14th, 2004 with Rimini.

Commemorative event

thumb|150px|rigth|Place Garibaldi This monument is the set up first, in Italy, with the memory of Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1884. This statue commemorates the passage of the “national hero” in the city on August 2nd, 1849. Coming from its last refuge of San Marino and fleeing the Austrian troops, Garibaldi and its men accepted on behalf of Cesenatico, the supply and 13 ships which enabled them to leave the area by the sea and to join Venice.
  • Festival " Garibaldi " place has first Sunday of August. it is celebrated in the honor of Garibaldi, Anita and of its patriots. She is held over all the day and is decorated:

    • of groups of local musicians,
    • of the play " chechmate of cocagne" who presents the characteristic, in addition to being coated of tallow, but being especially horizontally positioned on the channel and where the candidates must arrive at the end without falling in water.
    • of a fireworks, the come night.
