Cesare Garboli
Cesare Garboli (born with Viareggio in 1928, died with Rome the April 11th 2004) was a writer, essay writer and critical arts person Italy N.
Biography
Born in Viareggio in 1928, it is implied in the literary world to have finished its secondary studies shortly after: in the first months of 1951 he works as writer with the Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo , under the direction of Fedele and Sandro D' Amico. Meanwhile, he collaborates with Eduardo De Filippo on a work which, much to their regret, will not be published.The work of Garboli will proceed especially in the leading world. After having worked for the publishers Feltrinelli, Vallecchi and Mondadori, in 1962 he becomes director of the magazine Paragone , founded in Florence in 1959 by Roberto Longhi and Anna Banti. He is also in charge of a series of new, rare and unknown texts for the Adelphi editor.
After a short period in 1967 when he worked for the review He Saggiatore , he makes a small leading experiment with the the United States, following which he returns to Italy and directs there the publication of a series called Scritture . The articles and tests which he will write in this first part of his career for magazines and newspapers will be published in a volume, the stanza separata , by Mondadori.
The year 1971 is very animated for Garboli; it is constantly on a journey. He teaches the literature at the university of Macerata like to the polytechnic of Zurich, he collaborates with Mario Soldati on an emission tele and with Mario Bava on Scénario S of Cinéma.
The following year it had to resign of its work in the universities to turn over to its translations at Mondadori. It translates Shakespeare, Merivaux, Gide and Pinter, like Molière, a writer for whom it felt a particular affinity: in 1976, it publishes Molière. Saggi E traduzioni at Einaudi.
He knows the poet Sandro Penna, who influences it deeply. He publishes in 1984 Penna Papers , written as from the years 1960 and finished after the death of Penna. He will be republished in 1996.
After the death of Leonida Rèpaci in 1985, Garboli have to direct, with Natalino Sapegno, the prestigious Prix Viareggio. It will work there until the year of its death.
It publishes two tests in 1990: Flounces. Immagini LED '900 , containing writings on topics varied, and the anthology Trenta poetry familiari di Giovanni Pascoli , republished in 2002, little before its death.
In 2001 it publishes, at Einaudi, some tests under the title of Ricordi tristi E civili : dicussions and articles on cultural and political events of the last decades, a collection of the conferences and interviews already published of 1972 to 1998.
Its last collection of tests, Pianura proibita (2002), gains the price Elsa Morante.
In the last months of 2003, it continues to work in spite of its bad health. He dies the day of Easter, on April 11th, 2004.
