A certificate of safety is a document envisaged by article 10 of the European directive 2004-49, given by an authority of safety of a Member State to a Railway company. This document attests that the company set up a management system of the safety in conformity with the requirements of article 9 of the same directive. It is valid five years. It can relate on the totality of the railway network of a country or only to certain lines.
A railway company wanting to ensure an international service must obtain a certificate of safety in each crossed country.
The certificate can be withdrawn by the authority which delivered it in the event of failure with the safety regulations.
