Certificate in Advanced English

The Certificate in Advanced English ( CAE ) is an international examination sanctioning a certain level of control of the English language.

It is the fourth diploma by level of difficulty proposed by the organization Cambridge ESOL ( English for Speakers off Other Languages ) depend on the Université of Cambridge. It corresponds to the level C1 , Avancé or Indépendant defined by the common European Cadre of reference for the languages of the the Council of Europe.

It is possible to prepare the CAE in very many schools of language, in Great Britain or abroad, which propose a drive and practice tests within the framework of a Language course abroad. Because of the very formal character of the examination, a specific preparation is recommended.

Unfolding

The examination proceeds three times per year (in March, June and December). The inscription costs approximately 140 €. A candidate having failed can re-register himself several times.

The test includes/understands 5 parts ( Papers ) and generally proceeds over two days nonconsecutive:

  1. written comprehension - Reading (1h 15);

  2. written expression - Writing (2h);
  3. grammar - English in Uses (1h 30);
  4. oral comprehension - Listening (approximately 45 min);
  5. oral expression - Speaking (15 min) (is generally practiced in pair).

As from December 2008, a new grinding of the examination will be introduced. The introduced modifications relate inter alia to the methods of the Writing Paper .

Evaluation

Each Paper has the same weight and account for 20% in the total evaluation. Only the total evaluation is significant: there is no note, nor of eliminatory branch. The certificate is allotted to the candidates obtaining at least 60% of the points.

Five notes sanction the examination:

  • has : results > 80%;
  • B : result between 75% and 80%
  • C : result between 60% and 75%
  • D : result between 50% and 60%;
  • E : result lower than 50%;

The notes D and E sanction a failure with the examination.

The results are communicated by Internet approximately 1 month and half after the examination. The possible diploma is sent to the candidate more than 2 months after the examination.
