Cerro Galán
The volcano Cerro Galán is a active Stratovolcan but in sleep. It is located in the province of Catamarca, in Argentine, its large Caldera is regarded as being best exposed to the world. It is located at, and its altitude is of 5.912 meters.
Description
With its 5 912 meters of altitude, it constitutes a solid mass at multiple tops which dominates since its center enormous the Caldeira Cerro Galán, which extends to average altitude from 4 500 meters. The waters surface of Cerro Galán and the side walls of will caldeira formed a small lake in the south-west of the cone of the latter, it is Laguna Diamante. Tourism - access road
Cerro Galán is in a quasi uninhabited region. It is the case of all the area, which incontestably one of is moved back and the most isolated from Argentine. As in the whole of Puna de Catamarca, corresponding to the Department of Antofagasta of the Sierra, tourism is connected here with exploration.
To reach it, one follows the trunk road 40 from the town of Belén, in direction of north (towards Cafayate). Shortly after San Fernando, one takes on the left provincial roads 43 in direction of Antofagasta of the Sierra. One crosses the collar of Portezuelo de Pasto Ventura and a little later of enormous fields of stone-pounce. One passes thus not far from the volcano Carachi Pampa, as well as lagoon and salar of the same name.
Arrived at the village of El Peñón built in small a Oasis, one leaves road 43 to borrow a track which goes up Río El Peñón to arrive at immense the Caldeira Cerro Galán by its south-western edge, from where one has an extraordinary sight on the unit of will caldeira, of Laguna Diamante and the volcanic solid mass of Galán.
Useless to specify that only amateurs of tourism of adventure in good health and equipped well, will undertake this excursion out of the commun run in a perfectly uninhabited zone.
To note however that one finds hotel rooms in the city extremely distant from Antofagasta of the Sierra.
