History
Mentioned in 1164, Cerre belonged to the Fief S of the county of Burgundy. Cerre is mentioned in the acts of the 13th century: Guillermus Domicellus (damoiseau) of CERT lived in 1251.
Origin of the name
The name of Cerre, or rather Greenhouse, the Saar, according to the old orthography, originally indicated Montagne S with notched summit (tightened, saw). Later, one gave it by extension to wood which covered these mountains, or even simply a ground montueux. The village of Cerre-Les-Noroy, surrounded, as it is it, of timbered hills, appears to have drawn its name from wood, and not from the hills. (Ch.Longch., glan., p.97.)
