Cernet2

December 27th, 2004, the Popular republic of China announces to have launched the first Backbone network of the Internet new generation IPv6. This network is called CERNET2 (Education and Research Network Clouded), the equivalent of Internet2.

In Europe, the IPv6 is with the test, mainly in universities. The network Renater is in particular put at contribution.

The advertisement comes from eight departments different from the Chinese government.

In 2004, it is about the IPv6 wide-area network. It connects 25 universities in approximately 20 cities. In practice, the network can reach flows of 40 gigabits a second.

This project was directed by Wu Jianping, director of the committee of experts of CERNET.

One of the main advantages of IPv6 is its capacity to answer the shortage of addresses IPv4 from which the old network suffers.

Half of the key equipment by counting the routers is provided by Huawei Technologies, the Chinese giant of the telecoms, and Tsinghua Bit-Way.

The network was designed to connect 100 universities.
