Century

A century is now a period of one hundred Année S. the word comes from Latin saeculum, I, which meant race, generation. It indicated then the duration of a human generation and made 33 years 4 months (from where perhaps the age of Christ?). Very quickly, the century meant one 100 years duration.

Ten centuries form a Millénaire.

The 1st century of the Christian era begins on January 1st of the An 1 because there does not exist An 0 in the Gregorian Calendrier nor in the Calendrier Julien. The 2nd century begins on January 1st 101 because 1+100=101 and so on until the 21e century which begins on January 1st 2001 (2001 = 1 + 20 × 100).

It is a very current error to make begin the century with one year in advance (see the external bond below). Thus, Victor Hugo itself was mistaken. In its collection the Sheets of autumn , speaking about 1802, its year of birth, he writes:

This century was two years old! Rome replaced Sparte.
Déjà Napoleon bored under Bonaparte.

In French, the numbers of the centuries usually note in Roman numerals and small capital letters.
