Central library of Bern

The central Library of Bern (in the past the Stub ) belonged to the Library S of the University of Bern. It has approximately 2,1 million volumes distributed on 46 km of ray S.

With the Difference of the Swiss National library, it also collects foreign Publication S. The Accent is put however on the Bernese Publication S (Bernensia) ; those are collected in collaboration with the Bibliothèque of the Bourgeoisie of Bern (in German: Burgerbibliothek Bern ).

History

The exact Date of the foundation of the Bibliothèque is unknown. The birth is related to the context of the Réforme in the Canton of Bern in 1528. Starting from 1798, after the invasion of the French Army in Swiss, the Bibliothèque became the possession of the Ville of Bern. As from this moment, the Université started to follow its clean Politique of Bibliothèque. The principal problem was space separation between the Bibliothèque and the Université. This is why much of news Bibliothèque S specialized in a field were founded or developed. The goal was to find a possibility of building a new building near to the Université.

In 1951 was founded the “ Burgerbibliothek ” (middle-class Bibliothèque of Bern) which adopted the branches of the writing and graphics of the Public library.

In 1990, the Bibliothèque launched the Numérisation of the catalogs and is connected to the Université of Basle to manage their Données.

In 1999, the library joined IDS (Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz, i.e. the information network of the German-speaking Switzerland ) to improve its offer of service S and to open the Bibliothèque with the free access.

Chronology

  • 1803 : The Bibliothèque is transmitted to the common middle-class of Bern

  • 1903 : Fusion with the Library of the High school. Birth of the “Stadt- und Hochschulbibliothek” (Library municipal and university)

  • 1951 : Construction of the foundation “Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek” and foundation of “Burgerbibliothek Bern”

  • 1986 : Beginning of the Data-processing service in the administrative Management (acquisition, research in databases)

  • 1999 : Launching of IDS (Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz Basel/Bern)

The Bibliothèque offers works in the fields of the Social sciences, of the Droit, the economy, the Sociologie, the Informatique, the Géographie and the Théologie.

The Prêt to it compact disks is added (Classical music and Jazz).

Use/Catalog

The Ready with residence or in Salle of Lecture is opened with all. Since 1980, the Bibliothèque belongs to the network IDS whose catalogs is accessible on line.
