The province indonésienne of central Kalimantan ( Kalimantan Tengah ), was created at the end of the Années 1950 starting from the province of Kalimantan of the South. One of the reasons was the concern of giving more autonomy to the populations Daya compared to the other groups.

The province is bordered in the west by that of Western Kalimantan, in the south by the sea of Java, in the east by the province of the Kalimantan of the South and in north by that of the Eastern Kalimantan. Its capital is Palangkaraya.

The population of the province was of 1,8 million inhabitants in 2000.

Population

In the interior of the province various groups Daya live, of which most important is that of the Ngaju . On the coast Malais live which give each other the name of Banjar and represent approximately the quarter of the population. Among the other groups represented one finds of Bugis of the south of Célèbes, from the Java are born, the Madura is and the Ma' anyan S.

History

The territory of Large Dajak

December 7th, 1946 is created, at the instigation of the Dutchmen, the Dajak Besar (" Large Dayak"), which joined the République of the United States of Indonesia formed on December 14th, 1949. The territory is incorporated in the Republic of Indonesia on April 4th, 1950.

The territory corresponded approximately to that of the current province.
