Central Gotham

Gotham Central is a series of Comic S published by cd. Comics devoted to the daily newspaper of the police force of the fictitious city of Gotham, tallies of the adventures of Batman. The main theme of the series is the difficulty in being Policier in a city where cohabit Batman and of many Super-unpleasant. Another subjacent topic is that of the corruption of the police force.

History

The scenario writers Greg Rucka and ED Brubaker had already worked on a Cross-country race-over of Batman called Officer Down . They wished to make a series based on the police force of Gotham, project which was approved by cd. Rucka and Brubaker wanted Michael Lark as draftsman, but this last was not immediately available. That their made it possible to take lead on the intrigues. They wrote the first arc together, then shared the stories, Rucka dealing with the day shift, and Brubaker of the night shift.

Problems of sale

Gotham Central obtained a great critical success, as its multiple nominations with the Eisner Award testify some (better news series, better (S) scenario writer (S), and better inking draftsman/). In spite of this good press and the publicity which the fans made, the series was overall a commercial failure, the majority of the numbers having evil to return in signal 100 of the sales of comics. However, cd., encouraged by the sales of the first integral, let the creators continue their work. At the end of three years of publication, the series stopped. Even towards the end of the publication, the sales did not take off: the last but one number, the #37 reached the 102ème place, and the #38 the 120ème place of the classification of the sales.

End

Answering the assumptions of the fans according to whom the series would have been cancelled because of its weak sales, Greg Rucka explained why cd. was ready to continue the publication of the series as long as it wished it and that it be of its own boss that it chose to stop it. For him, the fate of the series is in decided fact when Lark stopped drawing it after the #25 then that Brubaker left it after the arc Dead Robin , because he did not see himself continuing without the original authors.
