Centile

In Statistical descriptive, a centile is each of the 99 values which divide the data sorted into 100 equal shares, so that each part accounts for 1/100 of the sample of population. The denomination English E - percentile - is often used wrongly with a francized pronunciation.

Calculation of the centiles

See with Quantile for the methods. The centile is calculated as a 100-quantile. Thus:

  • the 1st centile separates the 1% inferior from the data
  • the 98e centile separates the 98% inferiors from the data

We can define the ième percentile of N values classified by order ascending as being the value of row K equal to p (n+1) /100, rounded with the entirety nearest to the value corresponding to this row. An alternative method with the round-off consists of the numerical Interpolation linear between these two rows.
