Center European Culture

the Center of European Culture was created in 1989 on the initiative of the French Ministry of the Culture, of the Town of Saint Jean d' Angély, of the District council Poitou-Charentes and the General advice of the Charente-Maritime. It develops in the Royal Abbey of this city, of the multinational sessions of European culture and citizenship dedicated to the young people (16-19 years) of all the countries of Europe.

Since 1989, the Center is an governmental organization to propose to the young people of 25 countries intercultural sessions of European citizenship.

To date, more than 10.000 young people, persons in charge of youth organization, teachers of the secondary and the superior, craftsmen, artists, professionals of the civil society, actors of European construction from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Romania, Switzerland, Russia, Ukraine, took part in it.

The programs are mainly centered on multidisciplinarity:

  • conference-debates around the topic chosen for the meeting

  • workshops of art (theater, song, mosaic, fresco, video, cast iron of bronze, stained glass, penmanship, multi-media, sculpture on stone, etc)
  • excursion-discoveries of the inheritance around (natural, architectural, folk…)
  • intercultural workshops (European topical questions, inquires into the city, dinners international, etc)
  • spectacles, evenings sets of themes realized by the trainees, dinners in angériennes families, etc

The dynamics of the programs makes it possible to the participants to measure their differences, to appreciate their complementarities by becoming aware of their common roots, in short, to accept itself to be able to include itself/understand. It necessarily leads to the approach of the topical questions European (talks and debates prepared by the young people, meetings with the actors of European construction: European deputies, heads of undertakings, civils servant of the Commission, the the Council of Europe, etc). The multinational sessions of culture and citizenship are addressed to the classes last years of secondary education or to the groups of young people (16-9 years).

The team of the Center is composed by Alain Ohnenwald (Directing), Nicolas Lucas (Director-assistant), Catherine Moussion (executive secretary), Chantal Gaufreteau (Countable), Jennifer Frost (in charge of communication), Brigitte Mercier (human Resources), Christophe Bareau (manager), Lydie Roger (secretary) and David Chauveau (webmaster).
