Center Alberto-Benveniste for the studies and the culture sépharades
The Center Alberto Benveniste for the studies and the culture sépharades , founded in 2002, directed by Esther Benbassa, established with the Section of religious Sciences of the Practical School of the High Studies (Sorbonne, Paris), owes its existence with the bread-winner Benveniste (Lisbon-Lausanne). It has the role:
- the encouragement of research and creation on the judéo-Iberian world before and after the Expulsion of the Jews of Spain in 1492, as well in the field of the language, the culture as history.
The Center provides, in partnership with the Section of religious Sciences, the adequate scientific framing, and can offer material aids and financial various natures as well to the students as with the experienced researchers. Since 2004, it grants in particular each year a “Stock Exchange Sara Marcos de Benveniste in Jewish studies”, created by the brothers Monique and Serge Benveniste with the memory of their late mother, of an amount of 3.800 € to one (E) student (E) in Master 2 or Doctorate, registered voter (E) in a French university.
- the organization of an annual “Conference Alberto Benveniste” , in Sorbonne, ensured by a French or foreign academic of reputation, and giving place to publication.

First conference: Yirmiyahu Yovel, professor at the Hebraic University of Jerusalem and New School for Social Research of New York, on January 15th, 2002, on “the new otherness: dualities marranes of the first generations”.
- Second conference: Nathan Wachtel, professor at the Collège de France, on November 12th, 2003, on “Resurgences marranes in contemporary Brazil”.
- Third conference: Alisa Meyuhas Ginio, professor at the University of Tel-Aviv, on January 27th, 2004, on “the popular Bible sépharade like memory of the Jewish life”.
- Fourth conference: Ron Barkai, professor at the University of Tel-Aviv, on January 25th, 2005, on “Jews, Christians and Moslems in medieval Spain”.
- Fifth conference: Gil Anidjar, professor at the Columbia University of New York, on January 23rd, 2006, on “Cabal, literature and sephardity”.
- Sixth conference: Aron Rodrigue, professor at the University Stanford (the United States), on January 22nd, 2007 on “Sépharades and the `Final solution'”.
- attribution, every year, of the Price Alberto Benveniste . These prices, from 1.500 € each one, come to crown a literary work and a research task published in French and having a direct link with the field of interest of the Center.

Prizes winner 2002: in equal literature Sylvie Curtain-Denamy for the House of Jacob (Phébus) and Anne Matalon for Conference with the Club of the Close friends (Phébus), and in history Nathan Wachtel for the Faith of the memory. Labyrinths marranes (Threshold).
- Prizes winner 2003: in literature Angel Wagenstein for Abraham the Soak (the Spirit of the Peninsulas) and in history Sonia Fellous for History of the Bible of Arragel Brace. When a rabbi interprets the Bible for the Christians (Somogy).
- Prizes winner 2004: in literature Antonio Muñoz Molina for Séfarade (Threshold) and, in the field of research, fire Charles Mopsik (1956-2003) for the whole of its work and in particular for the Sex of the hearts (the Glare). Special mention with Turned pink Pinhas-Delpuech for Byzantine Continuation (Blue around).
- Prizes winner 2005: in literature Caroline Bongrand for of the Bosphorus (Robert Laffont) and, in the , the Child field research Daniel Lindenberg for Destinies marranes (Hatchet/Plural), like Marie-Christine Varol for her teaching and its Manual of Judeo-Spanish (Asiathèque).
- Prizes winner 2006: in literature Michele Kahn for of Seville (Editions of the Rock) and, in the , the Novel field research Jonathan Israel for radical Lights. Philosophy, Spinoza and birth of modernity (1650-1750) (Amsterdam Editions).
- Prizes winner 2007: in literature with Moris Farhi for Young Turks (Buchet-Chastel) and, in the field of research, with Danielle Rozenberg for contemporary Spain and the Jewish question. Joined again wire of the memory and the history (university Presses of Mirail).
- the organization of “Meetings Alberto Benveniste ” bringing together specialists around a topic related on the history and the culture in the judéo-Iberian world.

First meetings of the kind, the “literary Dawdlings sépharades. Lisbon, Paris, Istanbul…” were organized in Paris March 22nd, 23rd and 24th 2003.
- the constitution of funds of documentation and a library intended to facilitate the work of the researchers and students. The cataloguing of the works and documents placed at the disposal (more than 2000) is completed today.
The Center Alberto Benveniste publishes each year, since 2006, the Cahiers Alberto Benveniste . Two numbers appeared to date:

The Center Alberto Benveniste works in close cooperation with the Center of modern history and contemporary of the Jews of the EPHE, itself component of the EA 4117 “Northern Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Jewish cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean: history and interculturality since the Middle Ages”.
