Censer

A censer is one burns Parfum used in the catholic Liturgie.

The Encens which is consumed comes from vegetable resins odoriferous which symbolize the Prière, the purification and assembled to the Cieux. The incense has also a medicinal value and it belongs to the offerings of the Mage S at the time of the Nativité, with the Or and the Myrrhe.

One of the most remarkable censers in the world is the Botafumeiro, of the cathedral of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. The being used as mass which carries the censer is called Thuriféraire .

Uses in the liturgy

The censer is used at various times during the eucharistic celebration:

  • during the procession of entry. The priest encense then the furnace bridge on which the Saint-Sacrifice will be celebrated, as well as the cross,
  • before the reading of the Évangile, the delivers Évangéliaire is encensée,
  • during the Offertoire, the Pain and the Vin, which will become the Body and the Blood of the Christ, is encensés,
  • at the time of the Consécration: during the rise in the Body and Blood of Christ.
  • Comes then encensement from celebrating as a sign of purification, then the other ministers and finally the faithful ones,
  • If it is about a funeral ceremony, the Catafalque is encensé last once and is sprinkled Eau bénite at the end of the Messe.
