Celtic (bovine race)

The Celtic branch corresponds to a whole of bovine races resulting from areas of Europe of the North-West.

Origin

This black branch arrived to Western Europe at the Neolithic , brought by the people which raised it. Resulting from the shores Mediterranean, this cattle is related with the races the Camargue and Hérens. It is the Celtic civilization of Ireland, which it first with selected cows on the dairy capacity, at one time when with the the Middle East or in southernmost Europe, the cattle was useful especially for its labor force, its meat or its leather.
La variation of color of the black initial towards red wheat and black and white would come from old crossings with the cattle Viking established in Normandy, then more recently, of crossings with the British durham .
La current distribution of these races corresponds to the areas strongly influenced by the Celtic culture: Brittany in France, Ireland and Great Britain.

Distribution

Currently, they are races with small manpower in France, but the British races experienced a very strong development and were exported in North America. The Canadian dairy livestock includes/understands much Canadian, Jersey and Ayrshire which support the roughness of the soil well. Jersey was introduced with the the Caribbean and in Africa of the West to improve the dairy potential of the local races. The Dexter is high like cow of approval. It mows the parks and its calf with a size in adequacy with that of the domestic freezers. thumb|right|500px|Cows guernesey in their island of origin

Common characteristics

They are races of small or average format and with short horns. They hold records of small size: the Breton magpie black measurement 1,10 m with the garrot. The Dexter measurement 1 m, and its smallest individuals are selected with the the United States to produce a pet around 0,75 m in height for less than 200 kg. They generally have a fine silhouette and a light skeleton.
Ce is races with dairy predominance, with high proteinic rates and very high butyreux rates. They agree perfectly for the production of butter and cheese.
Elles is the effective transformer ones: they produce much compared to their size and can develop poor fodder of quality: they come from areas on the acid ground and the poor vegetation. They present good aptitudes to travel towards very different climates, cold and dry Canadian winter with the wet heat of Jamaïque.
Ce are also of good geneticians who improve the dairy capacities very well of the races with which they are cross.
On the other hand, their conformation of average carcass and their speed of poor growth a long time made them forsake production of meat. However, today one discovered that they are races with vêlage easy, even in crossing, and whose dairy capacity makes it possible to raise its calf easily. This quality is made profitable in crossing with better formed races bouchères. The result gives calves which are born small (facility of vêlage), and grow quickly thanks to the genetics of the father and with the milk of the mother.
