Cellieu
Cellieu is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
History
At the beginning of our era, the area is particularly marked by the Roman presence, testifies some, the construction of the aqueduct of Gier by the Romans. This one feeds out of water Lugdunum (Lyon) and goes from Saint-Chamond to Lyon, while crossing the parish of Cellieu of the South in North.At the 12th century and until the Revolution, the parish of Cellieu depends on the region of Lion. In the instruments, one speaks then about " Cellieu as Lyonese ". The canons counts de Lyon will impose on the population, of the particularly hard conditions of existence. With the the Middle Ages and until the Revolution, most of the territory of the parish is only divided between some owners: canons of Lyon, the marquis of Saint-Chamond and the religious congregations.
In 1789, the Rhone department and the Loire is created. Cellieu depends then on the district of Saint-Etienne and the canton of Saint-Romain the orchards (Saint-Romain-in-Jarez). Cellieu elects its first municipal council on September 13rd, 1791 which has as a mayor Jean-Marie Bajard.
Cellieu owes its name with the Latin expression Celae locus “the place of the monastery”.
It is only at the 13th century that the name of Cellieu is used.
