Cellar with the Fairies

The Cave with the Fairies is a covered Allée of the Neolithic time located on the commune of Brueil-in-Vexin in the Yvelines (France). This monument megalithic was classified Historic building on March 8th, 1957.

This prehistoric, known monument since always by the inhabitants of the places, is appeared as a pit directed according to a slightly shifted axis towards the east compared to the North-South axis, established with hillside on the northern slope of the valley of Montcient, just upstream of the village of Brueil-in-Vexin. The bedside, around whose a circle of limes was planted, is towards north, and the entry towards the south.

The walls are made up large flagstones of sandstones planted vertically in the ground and whose interstices are filled by stones Calcaire S. the bedside is delimited by a single flagstone. Close to the entry, a flagstone comprising an opening, of which there remains only the lower part, delimited an anteroom. The flagstones of covers, which still remained at the 18th century, have since missing. Dimensions of the shady walk are of 14 meters in length on 2,25 X 2,25 meters in height and width with the bedside and 2 X 2 m close to the entry.

Excavations were carried out in 1889 by Adrien de Mortillet. This one found the layer prehistoric intact in its central part, whereas the bedside and the entry had already been excavated. It met over a length of approximately ten meters two layers of bones from 20 to 30 centimetres thickness, separated by layers from plates limestones and sandy ground. The examination of the bones resulted in estimating at approximately 150 the number of burials carried out in the room. The intermediate size of the individuals was estimated at 1,61 m for the men and 1,52 m for the women. Various objects were also found of which an outline of axe, blades of Silex, pearls in bone, teeth bored of small and various shards of Poterie.

By the continuation, the shady walk was abandoned with its fate and was used in particular as discharge during the Second world war. In 1957, a cleaning of the places made it possible to extract from the abondonnées ammunition including 27 shell.
